Last week in The Financial Times, it was announced that by early next year, the public could be able to buy themselves a slice of the Google pie. The Internet search leader is apparently giving serious consideration to the idea of an initial public offering (IPO) of shares equating to 10-15% of the company.

Hot on the heels of this news comes speculation that Google representatives have met with Microsoft to discuss the possibility of a partnership or merger with the world’s biggest software company. Search industry analysts believe that the fact that Microsoft would consider such a deal is proof that Google poses a great competitive threat to Microsoft’s search industry aspirations.

It has also been reported that Google has considered bypassing the usual Wall Street channels and instead providing investors with the ability to purchase the shares online. This would greatly disappoint many major investment banks, hoping to secure some large profits through involvement in the Google IPO.

Luckily for these companies, the traditional system of offering shares is still the most likely avenue to be used by Google. To this end, Google is said to be narrowing down the list of potential investment banks whose services may be required for the IPO. Morgan Stanley is believed to be the major contender, but there are five or six other banks that are still in the hunt. If this IPO goes ahead, it should help to cement Google’s position as search market leader before major competitive moves are made by Microsoft or Amazon.

How to find out how many pages of your site are indexed:  Go to Google Search and type "allinurl:www.domain.com" (without the quotes, replacing "domain" in the above example with your own domain name). This query operator will return a list of every page of your site. Look in the blue bar across the top of the Google results page and you'll see the number of pages indexed at your site!

Two of the most determining factors in Google's ranking are your domain name and title tag. For example, a domain name such as: http://www.computer-electronics.com  will generally get ranked higher than http://www.companyname.com , assuming that they had identical keywords and page content. Another useful tactic -- is to add your keywords into the names of your pages, such as http://www.companyname.com/computer-electronics.htm 

 
  • Your title tag is equally as important as your domain name. Using keywords in your title tag can improve your Google ranking significantly. Trying to achieve a balance of professionalism with keyword density in the title tag however, is sometimes a little more difficult. A good title tag would be: <title>"Company name provides affordable computer and electronics services in Chicago."</title>

    Usually, the closer to the front of your title tag the keywords are placed, the better. <h1> tags seem to have been depreciated by style sheets these days, and are not used as often as they used to be.

    The Google ranking algorithm dictates that if you're using a <h1> tag, then the text in between this tag must be more important than the content on the rest of the page. Here's a quick example: <h1>Google sees this text as more important</h1>  <p>... than this text</p>. 

    By default, H1 tags aren't the prettiest in terms of formatting, so using a CSS style to override the default look is usually a good idea: H1 { color: blue; font-family: Verdana; font-size: 16px }


  • Sprinkling keywords throughout your page content can also improve your sites keyword density. Keyword density simply means the ratio of optimized keywords to the rest of the content on your page. It is usually expressed as a percentage, and should be between 7% and 10% for each page on your site.

    Don't overdo the keyword density, however, but don't overlook it either. A good example would be:

    BEFORE
    Company name provides affordable computer and electronics services in Chicago.

    AFTER
    Company name provides affordable computer and electronics services to the Chicago region in Illinois
    Notice how we use the keywords more efficiently the second time around?


  • Back links are websites that link directly to your website. The general principal is the more back links you have, the higher your pages will be ranked, as your website must be good if so many other sites are linking back to it.


  • Submitting your site to dmoz.org, Yahoo! and other directories is also an important step to increase the number of sites linking back to yours. Setup a links page like ours: Apondo Systems Links Page, and ask other webmasters for reciprocal links. Link Partners.com provides a superb tool for automated management of a links page.

Web Design Tips
  • Write in layman's terms so that everybody can understand your content, unless you're running a technical site for technical people.
  • Reading from a screen is painful: use 50% less words than you would use on print.
  • If a page is too long, break it into several pages and link to them.
  • Frames - Search engines don't understand frames, it's as simple as that. If a website has frames, then the search engine's spider will visit the website and either leave or only look at the pages on the site that aren't in frames. Preferably you shouldn't use frames but if you absolutely have to, then make sure you have your keywords listed in your no-frames tag for all of the search engines to see.
  • Don't use font sizes smaller than 10pt. for the body of your page. Specify your fonts in percentage terms instead of pixels to let users set their own size preferences using their browser's text view options.
  • Use a spell checker. Spelling mistakes are embarrassing and hurt credibility.
  • Ask for feedback: include a feedback form in your Contact Us page.
  • Publish an ezine and include a subscription form in your homepage. Give your customers valuable information and encourage them to contact you.
  • Too Many Graphics - If used properly, attractive graphics and flashy multimedia can make your website look very impressive. Unfortunately search engines can only read text. So no matter how good your graphics are, your website will only achieve a good ranking if the search engines can find high quality text that contains keywords that are relevant to your site.
  • Include poll Make your links descriptive. They should indicate what the user will be linking to, as opposed to just saying "click here's and other tools to gather market intelligence.
  • Don't underline anything that is not a link.
  • Underline your links and use a consistent color for them across your site (preferably blue) .
  • Use a different color for visited links, so that your visitors know where they've been (preferably purple or a more subdued tone of the unvisited links color).
  • When linking to a non-HTML file, such as Excel, Word or Acrobat, make it evident, by including a small icon next to the link.
  • Don't link to "under construction" pages.
  • Doorway pages - A popular tactic among webmasters was to produce many slightly altered copies of their WebPages in order to compensate for the different algorithms used by search engines to index sites. Search engines can usually detect when people have tried to use this method to trick them and will either penalize the site or simply ban it altogether. Avoid using doorway pages under any circumstances.
  • Make sure that your links work and that you don't have broken links. There are free online tools that can help you with this.
  • If you use graphic links, don't forget to use the ALT attribute. The ALT attribute should describe what you are linking to.
  • Optimize your graphics. Use only .gif and .jpg formats. Make your image files as small as possible while maintaining acceptable quality. Use a free online graphics optimization tool.
  • Use thumbnails (miniature versions of a picture) and make them clickable to the actual size picture.
  • Avoid graphics that look like ads. People ignore them.
  • Use the ALT attribute on pictures, even if the image is not a link. It helps users with disabilities and people who have turned off graphics.
  • Create short, descriptive page titles, to entice search engine users to click on your links.
  • Create a site map containing all your pages, and link to it directly from your homepage. Search engine robots will follow the link to your site map and will most likely add all your pages to their index.
  • Decide what the two or three main keywords are for each page (the words you believe search engine users will type to find your page) and repeat them often in your page title, description meta tag and page body.
  • Create a Links page and call it Resources. In it, place links to those sites that have agreed to place a reciprocal link to your page. The more inbound links you have from quality sites with a topic related to your site, the better your site will rank with the search engines.
  • Use more text than graphics, and minimize the use of Flash and JavaScript. Search engines heavily favor text and will crawl and index your site faster.
